Computer Tips and Tricks

This is a compiled list of suggestions for you to optimize the Indiana University resources that are at your disposal.

  • Restart your computer frequently (as often as when you leave work each day). A daily restart will keep your computer running at its maximum performance level, and it will keep many of the minor computer bugs from popping up.
  • Save all of your work on the File server. If you save any files on your computer and it crashes, then it will be a long time before you are able to recreate all of the files that you have now lost. On the other hand, if you save your files on the server, and your computer needs to be rebuilt, then it won’t cost you any time to recreate your server shortcut to your intact files.
  • Do not use your IU e-mail address as your main e-mail address when you fill out any forms such as credit card applications or sign up for any services, especially online. SPAM e-mail will drive you crazy, and it will surprise you how quickly it builds up. Create a secondary hotmail or yahoo e-mail account to use for these online inquiries that you will check periodically to clean up. In the case of e-mail, don’t mix business with your personal life.
  • Dogbert's Tech Support Cartoon
  • Create a strong password, and do not write it down or share it with anyone. Identity Theft is a major problem, and a strong password is a great defense.
  • In the display properties, set your computer to password protect itself when it returns from your screensaver.
  • Keep your e-mail quota in mind, and take the proper steps to monitor and control your e-mail account size.
  • Use Office Communicator instead of e-mail to carry out simple conversations.
  • Check out or reserve any resources such as the laptops, projectors, or conference rooms in Outlook to avoid any problems or confusion with these services.
  • If you need help setting up or using some of our technical resources, then be sure to give advanced notice (a day or more) to the person that you need help from.
  • Keep proper ergonomics in mind when spending time at computer workstations. Mouse and keyboard wrist supports are available and very helpful. Check out these OSHA ergonomic solutions for more information.
  • Take short breaks from your computer monitor and work on other tasks to save eye-strain. A short break every hour or two will go a long way.
  • If at all possible, try to avoid considerable light reflections on your monitor.
  • If any of our resources are causing you problems, be sure to let the VPUR IT staff know immediately.
