First Year

Several programs and initiatives work to ease the transition to college life and academics for first-year students. Students can explore majors, minors, and potential careers using online resources, and receive support and mentoring as they adjust to university life. They can also participate in courses that introduce them to new ideas, new friends, and campus life.

Explore Majors
A gateway enabling prospective and current students and parents to explore IU’s majors, minors, and their related careers. This resource includes links leading to academic and career information, workshops, and events for making the best decision about majors and minors at IU.

Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs)
A program for freshman that connects learning from the classroom to the residential hall. A FIG consists of a group of 10 to 15 students living in the same residence hall who take two to three courses together, and enroll in a one-credit seminar that is built around a common theme. The seminar is a small discussion-based course led by a graduate student in which students develop skills that enhance academic achievement and discover how disciplines relate to one another.

Intensive Freshman Seminars (IFS)
IFS is a three-credit, three-week program that occurs just before the fall semester, designed especially for incoming freshmen; participants take one of 20 courses taught by some of IU’s most dedicated teachers.
