Funding awarded for IU modern dance projects
Indiana University Bloomington faculty members Selene Carter, George Pinney and Elizabeth Shea have been selected to receive funding in 2012 from the Fran Snygg Grant for Artistic Collaboration and the Fran Snygg Endowment Fund.
IU program and reception to honor departing Provost Karen Hanson
Indiana University will bid farewell to IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson on Jan. 12 with a program and reception at the IU Auditorium. The event, which is open to the public, will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the IU Auditorium.
Linguist Jackendoff to present Patten Lecture at Indiana University
Ray Jackendoff, whose research is focused on integrating analysis of language with the functioning of the mind and general principles of cognition, will present the first Patten Lectures of 2011-12 at Indiana University on Nov. 8 and Nov. 10.
18 students selected as Wells Scholars at Indiana University
Indiana University announced today (Aug. 9) that 17 entering freshmen and one current IU junior will join the more than 460 others who have been named Wells Scholars since the first class enrolled in 1990.

Indiana University Bloomington today (July 7) announced the selection of faculty members with distinugished leadership ability to participate in the Academic Leadership Program during the 2011-12 academic year. The program is sponsored by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), a consortium of the Big Ten member universities plus the University of Chicago.

Recipients of the Indiana University Outstanding Junior Faculty Award this year are Joshua Brown (Psychological and Brain Sciences), Michael Foster (Folklore and Ethnomusicology), Ilana Gershon (Communication and Culture), Amit Hagar (History and Philosophy of Science), and Eden Medina (Informatics and Computing).
Fran Snygg 2011 arts award recipients announced
Indiana University's Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs has announced the winners of the Fran Snygg Grant for Artistic Collaboration and the Fran Snygg Endowment Fund. This year's recipients are Elizabeth Shea, Gwendolyn Hamm, and Selene Carter from the Department of Kinesiology at the Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) and George Pinney from the Department of Theater & Drama in the College of Arts & Sciences.
IU Office of Sustainability announces two grant opportunities
The IU Office of Sustainability today announced two opportunities in support of faculty research and teaching efforts related to sustainability: the Sustainability Research Development Grant program and the Sustainability Course Development Fellowships.
Carnegie classification recognizes IU Bloomington for community engagement
Indiana University Bloomington has been selected for 2010 Community Engagement Classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The classification recognizes the campus's commitment to engagement through economic development assistance for the state of Indiana, arts and cultural programming, service-learning and community volunteerism, international studies and partnerships, research in areas such as health and education, and other activities.
Political philosopher Nancy Fraser gives Patten lecture
Nancy Fraser, the Henry A. and Louise Loeb Professor of Politics and Philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York, will present two Patten Foundation lectures this spring at Indiana University. Fraser will speak on "Nature, Labor, Money: Flashpoints of Capitalist Crisis in the 21st Century" on January 25 (Tuesday), and on "Marketization, Social Protection, Emancipation: Grammars of Struggle in Capitalist Crisis" on January 27 (Thursday). Both lectures will take place in Rawles Hall, Room 100, at 7:30 p.m.
IU Distinguished Professor Burkholder honored by American Musicological Society
Distinguished Professor J. Peter Burkholder, chair of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Department of Musicology, has been named an honorary member of the American Musicological Society. At 56, he is the youngest person to receive the highest honor the society bestows on one of its members. This equivalent to a lifetime achievement award was announced at the group's annual meeting Nov. 6 in Indianapolis.
Charles Beeker recognized by Armenian scientists for research on Captain Kidd shipwreck
Charles Beeker, director of the Office of Underwater Science in Indiana University's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, has been honored by the National Academy of Sciences for the Republic of Armenia for his archaeological work with the Armenian-owned 1699 Quedagh Merchant, Captain Kidd's shipwreck discovered in the Dominican Republic.
IU Professors Téllez, Pryor and de Souza to be honored
Carmen Helena Téllez, professor in the Jacobs School of Music and the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Tracy M. Sonneborn Award at Indiana University, will be recognized on Nov. 4 in the IU Simon Music Center's Auer Hall. Also recognized will be Sara C. Pryor, professor in the Department of Geography, and Romualdo de Souza, professor in the Department of Chemistry, both of whom have been named Provost Professors.

One of America's preeminent philosophers of place, a leading advocate for environmental stewardship, and a fierce critic of agribusiness, Wendell Berry will present two Patten Foundation lectures this November at Indiana University.
International climate change scientist Palutikof speaks
Nobel laureate Jean Palutikof, professor and founding director of the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility (NCCARF) at Griffith University in Australia, will present two public lectures, Oct. 11 and Oct. 12, to launch Indiana University's William T. Patten Lecture Series for the 2010-11 academic year.
2010 Wells Scholars announced at Indiana University
Indiana University announced today that 18 entering freshmen and two current IU juniors will join the more than 440 others who have been named Wells Scholars since the first class enrolled in 1990. The scholarship, created in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.

Awards recognize students and mentors for research, creative activity
Five Indiana University Bloomington seniors, Nicole Beckage, Juliana Dumas, Rebeca Hernandez, Shannon McEnerney and Ellen Weinzapfel, have been named recipients of the Provost's Award for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity. The award recognizes excellence in research and creative activity and celebrates the importance of such experience for undergraduates.
Sustainability Course Development Fellowships recipients announced
Recipients of the Sustainability Course Development Fellowship are Laurel Cornell, associate professor in the Department of Sociology, Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, and Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures; and Christine Barbour, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Political Science. The fellowship is awarded by the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs at Indiana Univesity Bloomington, with support from IU's College of Arts and Sciences.
