Grupo de teatro VIDA presents

Trampa o triunfo: El enga–o en las manos de una mujer

(Trick or Triumph: Deceit in a WomanÕs Hands)

A Spanish language performance of three one-act plays

at the John Waldron Arts Center

December 7 – 9, 2006 at 8 pm

Bloomington, IN:  Grupo de teatro VIDA presents: Trampa o triunfo: En enga–o en las manos de una mujer (Trick or Triumph: Deceit in a WomanÕs Hands) – three one acts performed in Spanish as a part of the BAAC 2006-2007 Performance Series.

The focus of our work is a series of performances that unite under one common theme: "Trick or Triumph: Deceit in a WomanÕs Hands" (Trampa o triunfo: El enga–o en las manos de una mujer). The presentation consists of three one-act plays from different time periods that represent a transcontinental selection. Loosely translated, the titles are: The Old Jealous Man / El viejo celoso (1615), by Miguel de Cervantes (Spain); The White Apron / El delantal blanco  (1964), by Sergio Vodanovic (Chile); and Next in Line / La que sigue (1970), by Griselda G‡mbaro (Argentina). Together they offer thought-provoking commentaries about life that continue to speak to us today

Tickets for the performance will be available in advance at www.bloomingtonArts.info or at the door of the John Waldron Arts Center Auditorium prior to the performance. Individual tickets are $5 for general admission.

Specific information about the three one acts:

La que sigue, by Griselda G‡mbaro

Directed by Carolyn Jenkinson

Performed by Eva dÕAmbrosio and Lisbeth Trigueros

In this short piece, Zoraida - a ÒsuccessfulÓ fortune teller -  is totally taken by surprise by her next client, Paulita. At first Paulita seems to be skeptical, but through the twists and turns of the plot, the audience soon discovers that Paulita is more of a fortune teller than Zoraida is.

El delantal blanco, by Sergio Vodanovic

Directed by Marda Rose

Performed by Paula Sanmart’n and Brianna Peral, with a special appearance by Josep Miquel Sobrer

In this whimsical piece by Chilean playwright Sergio Vodanovic, the dynamics of social class and power are exposed in the relationship between a rich socialite and her female servant, during one day at the beach. The play ends with an intriguing and telling twist.

El viejo celoso, by Miguel de Cervantes

Directed by Myron Alberto çvila and Anita Park

Performed by Ernesto Aranda, Jenny Gibson, Israel Herrera C‡rdenas, Katrina Loh, Ryan Powell, and Val Savage

The Jealous Old Man (El viejo celoso) was published in 1615 in a volume called ÒEight New Comedies and Eight Entremeses, or One-Act Plays, Never Before Performed.Ó The topic of cuckoldry recurs in CervantesÕ works, notably in the novella The Jealous Man from Extremadura and in chapter 33 of the first half of Don Quijote, which recounts the story of the Curious Impertinent.

The Jealous Old Man tells the tale of Ca–izares and his wife Lorenza. Due to his extreme jealousy, Ca–izares locks his wife inside their house and prohibits anything—both animate and inanimate—from coming into contact with her. This leaves Lorenza extremely isolated and lonely. However, despite these obstacles, Lorenza - with her niece and neighbor - schemes to bring a man into the house. Together they use their wits to distract the jealous Ca–izares.

Trampa o triunfo: El enga–o en las manos de una mujer is part of the 2006-2007 BAAC John Waldron Arts Center Performance Series.

Info about Grupo de teatro VIDA

Grupo de teatro VIDA was founded by Marda Rose in January 2006 in order to create a space for Spanish language performance.  Our name, Grupo de teatro VIDA, comes from an acronym that unites four simple concepts: Vision, Identity, Drama, and Art. Out of these concepts comes a group of students, professors, and members of the Bloomington community working together to bring theatre pieces to the stage, in Spanish.

One of the objectives of this group is to provide another context in which both actors and we, the directors and producers, can share a unique experience where artistry meets language; while not all of us are native speakers, many of us are bilingual.

We aim to produce plays that foster cultural understanding and promote the richness of Hispanic culture and expression through live theater. It is our goal to establish an annual performance in Spanish and to create a space where speakers of all levels of Spanish proficiency can come together to produce quality productions in Spanish.

The BAAC would like to thank the 2006-07  Performance Series sponsors:  World Arts, Inc., Trojan Horse, Vectren, Fountain Square, Oliver Winery, Downtown Bloomington, WFIU and support from the Indiana Arts Commission.
