The following lecture was read at the seminar "Expansion and Reaction", a
reappraisal held on 30 September 1995, to
mark the occasion of the retirement of Professor H.L. Wesseling as director of the Institute for the History of European
Expansion (IGEER). Professor Wesseling is now the director of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS) in
Wassenaar. Professor P.C. Emmer has succeeded Professor Wesseling as Director of IGEER.

VISIT OF THE PRESIDENT OF GEORGIA
On April 22-23, the President of Georgia, Eduard SHEVARDNADZE came on for official visit
to Luxembourg and Belgium. During the visit the most important document was signed - Agreement on
partnership and collaboration with the European Union. The mentioned agreement creates the juridical
basis for deepening the political and trade-economical relations with European Union and represents a
legislative mechanism for realization of strategy of European Union.
