Gerald L. Bepko Student Internship Program 2011-2012

Communications Intern

(Internship filled)

Project overview:

The UITS Communication Office seeks an intern to assist with student outreach and marketing of UITS services. This internship would be appropriate for students at IU Bloomington with backgrounds or interest in marketing, communications, graphic design, public relations, and/or fund-raising to conduct research, to coordinate student outreach teams, and to assist with communications that build student awareness in IU's IT services.

The intern will assist in the coordination of the UITS Student IT Ambassador program. The intern.s responsibilities will be to advise the Communication Office and the extended UITS communications team on messages, media, and events designed for student audiences at the University; to develop and market information programs targeted to students; and to provide coordination of select teams to assist with these duties. As part of this effort the intern will assist in identifying key messages and strategies to communicate to students. The intern will also be involved in research on new (or expanded) ways for communicating to students. As part of this project, the intern will have an opportunity to work with all members of the Communication Office, as well as with a variety of subject matter experts within UITS. The intern will be based at IU Bloomington.

Each year the UITS user surveys suggest a great many students are not aware of the information technology services available to them on their campuses. In addition, "Empowering People" IU's strategic plan for information technology charges the Communications Office with implementing action 47 "Student Communications". It states: "IU should accelerate its communication programs that help students understand the potential and limitations of information technology, highlight new technologies and uses, promote effective and efficient use practices, and recommend practices for protecting intellectual privacy and property." This internship will enhance these communications programs.

Building upon the valuable insights gained from past internships, we will continue to seek more meaningful ways to engage with students who use technology, especially as we develop communication strategies for such high priority areas as student email, emergency notification, online safety and security, wireless technologies, and more. The data gained about student IT patterns and interests will help us more effectively target messages and leverage our resources for a broad range of students. In addition to helping us gain that understanding, the intern will also help us plan and execute appropriate communication strategies.

The internship will be valuable to students seeking careers in technical communications, marketing, or public relations in the broad field of information technology.
