Basic Service - 10 Mb to the desktopUITS will provide a 10Mbps Ethernet connection to an existing data jack that has been installed through the proper IUB installation procedures. We cannot be responsible for activating or servicing any data jacks that have been installed by the user or outside contractor. Due to fire, safety and other external considerations, the data jack must be located in the same room as the device that is connected to it. 100 Mbps to the desktopIn IUB buildings with the available equipment, users can request to have their data connection upgraded to 100Mbps, Fast Ethernet. Additional 100Mbps connections, that would exceed the availability of spare ports, will either be provided by UITS as a part of our scheduled equipment replacement plans or at the expense of the requester if no immediate plans exist. Additionally, the user's data jack and station cable must be of Category 5E quality. Contacting commreq@indiana.edu will initiate a needs accessing site visit. 1000 Mbps to the desktopIn special circumstances, users may request to have their data connection upgraded to 1000Mbps. UITS will take these requests on a case by case basis. Once a request has been made, UITS will thouroughly examine the needs of the requestor and determine whether gigabit is necessary. If it is determined that a gig connection is warranted, then the requester will need to assume the costs of the upgrade if the equipment is not in place for the upgrade. There will be no equipment cost if spare ports are available. Additionally, the user's data jack and station cable must be of Category 6 quality. Contacting iubdata@indiana.edu along with commreq@indiana.edu will initiate a needs accessing site visit. Station cablesAn "IU Wall Cable" is required to attach a computer to an IUB data jack. Standard Ethernet cables that sometimes are included with a Network Interface (Ethernet) Card will not function in an IU data jack. You may obtain these cables from the UITS Business Office (http://www.indiana.edu/~uits/business/resaleform.html). User-made station cables are not recommended or supported by UITS.
