Eligibility

Have the eligibility criteria for IU Tuition Benefit changed?

The eligibility requirements for the IU Tuition Benefit have not changed. Eligible individuals include full time IU Academic and Staff employees, former employees with Retiree Status, spouses, registered domestic partners and dependent children.

What if I have questions about whether I am eligible or how to enroll in IU Tuition Benefit?

Your campus Human Resources office will be able to determine if you are eligible and advise you how to enroll in the benefit.

What if both parents are full-time Academic or Staff employees? Can/will the IU Tuition Benefit be received under both parents?

An eligible dependent child can receive the benefit from only one of the eligible parents.

Dates

When do I apply for IU Tuition Benefit?

Employees are encouraged to submit the enrollment form well before the beginning of the academic year each fall. If the enrollment form is processed after the student is billed for tuition, the Tuition Benefit award becomes a reimbursement after the student has paid all tuition.

Rates and benefit limits

What are the dollar limits for the spouse and employee IU Tuition Benefit?

The rates may be found on the benefits amounts page.

Will the employee and spouse benefit limits be based on the tuition at the campus where the student is enrolled or the campus where the employee works?

The benefit is based on the campus where the student is enrolled.

Will the benefit be based on the recipient's standing (graduate or undergraduate) or on whether the class is a graduate class or undergraduate class?

The benefit is based on the recipient's standing. For example, if an undergraduate student takes a graduate class he or she will be charged the undergraduate rate and tuition will be covered up to the undergraduate IU Tuition Benefit limit.  

If a graduate student takes an undergraduate class he or she will be charged graduate tuition and receive up to the maximum amount for graduate IU Tuition Benefit.

What will my benefit be for the graduate or professional programs?

All recipients will receive either the same benefit or a slightly higher benefit depending upon if they are enrolled in a graduate program or professional program. Please contact University Human Resource Services at (812) 855-3825 for more information.

Forms

Where do I find the IU Tuition Benefit form and where do I submit it?

Enrollment forms can be found at the Tuition Benefit web page. Forms are to be submitted by the employee to University Human Resources Services.

Who do I contact to find out the status of my enrollment form?

To check on the status of your enrollment form you should contact your campus of employment or the campus of enrollment.

What if I have already submitted a IU Tuition Benefit form for the academic year?

If you have already submitted an IU Tuition Benefit form to the campus of enrollment, you will not be required to re-enroll for that academic year. You will need to submit a new form if you are enrolling for the Summer Sessions.

Charges and billing

Who do I contact to find out why my IU Tuition Benefit did not get applied to my bursar bill?

If your tuition benefit does not get applied to your bursar bill you should contact University Human Resource Services or the campus of enrollment to verify the status of your enrollment form. If your enrollment form has been processed you should then contact the Office of the Bursar on the campus of enrollment to discuss your bill.

Will the IU Tuition Benefit benefit apply to all the charges on my bursar bill?

The benefit applies only to tuition charges. It does not apply to special fees such as those for laboratories, applied music, student teaching, education early experience, dissertation research (G901 and B798), or rental of special equipment or facilities. Activity, health, technology and transportation fees are also not covered by the IU Tuition Benefit.

What if I need help understanding the charges on my tuition bill, or believe that the charges on my Bursar bill are not correct?

Contact the Bursar's office at the campus where you are enrolled.

Audit hours, independent study, etc.

Does the benefit apply to audit hours?

Tuition for audit hours is covered by the IU Tuition Benefit for employees, former employees with retiree status, spouses or registered domestic partners.

Does the IU Tuition Benefit benefit apply to independent study courses?

Independent study courses are covered by the IU Tuition Benefit; however, it will be processed as a reimbursement after the course has been completed. Please contact University Human Resource Services at (812) 855-2007 for more information.

Does the IU Tuition Benefit apply to the MBA online courses?

MBA online courses are covered by the IU Tuition Benefit for employees, former employees with retiree status, spouses or registered domestic partners.

Other

Will my dependent child see a change in benefits?  

The benefit remains the same for dependent children.

Are graduate courses subject to tax if the recipient's standing is undergraduate?

IU Tuition Benefit for graduate level courses is treated as taxable income under 1996 Federal legislation. If an undergraduate student enrolls in a graduate course and receives tuition benefit for that course it will be considered taxable. In accordance with IRS regulations, these taxes will be withheld from the employee's pay.

If a graduate student enrolls in an undergraduate course the tuition benefit received for that course will not be considered taxable.

What if I have a question about my financial aid application (FAFSA)?

Contact your campus Office of Financial Aid.

What if I have questions regarding IU Tuition Benefit and how it impacts my grants, scholarships, etc.?

Contact your campus Office of Financial Aid.

What if I have questions about the IU Tuition Benefit policy or whether I qualify for a manual adjustment during the two-year transition period?
