Glen Spencer -- Master Sphere Cutter and Lapidary (continued)
Glen pursued sphere cutting as a hobby until 1988, when he decided to risk his life’s savings and go into the lapidary business full-time, leaving behind forty years of service in the electric business. His dedication to fine craftsmanship bolstered his reputation, as Glen will tell you: “We do precision work as good as the stone will allow us to do. I built special machines to make these [spheres] precision-ground and -polished so they can be the best there is.”
Nationally and internationally known, Glen’s stone spheres have been given as gifts to numerous celebrities, including Indiana weatherman Bob Gregory, musician Waylon Jennings, and entrepreneur Ross Perot. After nearly twenty years, Glen is retiring from the lapidary business and is currently passing on his sphere cutting expertise to Mark and Tina Bennett, the new owners of Spencer’s Lapidary in Elwood.
