Traditional Arts Indiana is pleased to announce the grand opening of the Center for Folk Traditions in Nashville, Indiana.

The Center for Folk Traditions celebrates the everyday creativity of Indiana residents. From quilting, sheep sheering, and fiddling to dance, storytelling, and candy making, the artistic diversity displayed in our center highlights Indiana's rich folk traditions. The Center offers exhibits, film screenings, public programs, musical performances, and hands-on demonstrations that showcase individuals and communities in the state.

The Center for Folk Traditions in Nashville, IN announces its fall gallery opening with the exhibit: "Ruralismo" Revisited: Multimedia Artefacts from Richmond Indiana's Rowntree Records

Rowntree records was an unofficial, member driven music label centered in Richmond Indiana. Come visit the Center for Folk Traditions in Nashville, IN and explore the multimedia exhibit and learn what this small, young group of dedicated do-it-yourself artists were able to do outside the commercial recording industry before the era of massive Internet communication.

Also featured in the exhibit are rag-rug weaver Dee Neirman, hoop-net maker Dan Cain, willow basket weaver Viki Graber. Our next exhibit will feature the Sisters of the Cloth quilting guild from Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009, 5-8pm

First Saturday of each month, 2009, the Center for Folk Traditions is proud to host the Brown County Dulcimer Society Jam, 3-5 pm. All ages, abilities, and instruments welcome. You don't have to play the dulcimer, but can play other instruments along with dulcimers.

Second Saturday of each month, 2009, the Center will host the Fiddle Tunes Jam Session, 3-5pm in partnership with Weedpatch Music. If you play the fiddle, banjo, guitar, dulcimer, mandolin, or something that would accompany those instruments, come on down to the Fiddle Tunes Jam. This session offers a relaxed environment for beginning and intermediate players to jam, learn some new tunes, new tricks, and have a great time.

Master folk percussionist Bill Bailey led a rhythm jam extravaganza!
We had washboards, spoons, shakers, and all kinds of assorted noise-makers for people to play. You never know what Bill's going to have to make noise with.
You don't have to have musical ability when you arrive, YOU'LL HAVE IT WHEN YOU LEAVE!

Ukulele Concert

Saturday, Oct. 18th, 2008, at 1:30pm

Ukulele builder and player Geoff Davis played along with his daughter's ukulele duo Pholly at the Center for Folk Traditions in Nashville, IN. Geoff learned the ukulele from his parents as a child, and has taught his daughter to play. Both performed their own brand of ukulele music, from classic jazz tunes to contemporary pop songs.

Free, fun, and family friendly.

Iuri Santos and Capoeira Angola performed traditional Brazilian music and martial arts at the grand opening.

The Grand Opening Reception featured Old-Time fiddle music by master fiddler Harold Klosterkemper from Greensburg, IN, and James Yang of Bloomington performing Chinese music on the ehru, a two-stringed bowed instrument sometimes called the "Chinese fiddle."

Banister Family Bluegrass Band, September 21st, 2008, 1:30pm


The Banister Family Bluegrass Band features Columbus bluegrass musicians and instrument builders.
