In 2009, our research team began to investigate "Exciting Schools" in North America, targeting United States public schools most specifially. We have been looking for schools that model 21st Century learning process or systems that have undergone a systemic transformation from an Information Age model to a 21st Century Information Age model.

To accomplish this task, researchers shared information gathered in the course of other subjects as well as using a web survey to gather nominations for exciting schools. Once a district or school was nominated, researchers completed a matrix describing the kinds of 21st Century practices that are offered.
