Foreign Language and Area Fellowships (FLAS)

Graduate students should apply for FLAS funding from their home institutions, in addition to applying to IU for FLAS support.  Please contact us for more information about who to contact at your home institution.

Students applying for both FLAS and Title VIII fellowships must submit a full set of transcripts and two or three letters of recommendation.

A number of FLAS fellowships to eligible students will be available through the REEI to study the following languages: Russian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Yiddish, and Georgian, and through IAUNRC to study: Arabic, Dari, Hungarian, Kazakh, Mongolian, Pashto, Persian, Tatar, Turkish, Uyghur and Uzbek.

To be eligible for a FLAS award you must:

  • be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • meet the following per language requirements: Russian--third year or higher for undergraduate students/placement in second year or higher for graduate students (preference given to applicants at higher levels); other East European languages and Georgian—graduate student status as defined below; Central Asian languages—placement in second year or higher for undergraduate students/first year or higher for graduate students
  • meet the following academic status  guidelines:
    • Undergraduate students:
      • Good academic standing
      • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program during Summer 2012 or accepted for undergraduate enrollment for Fall 2012
      • Demonstrated commitment to continued study of the region
    • Graduate student:
      • Good academic standing
      • Currently enrolled in a graduate program during Summer 2012 or accepted for graduate enrollment for Fall 2012
      • Demonstrated commitment to continued study of the region

FLAS fellowships cover tuition costs and provide an estimated allowance of $2,500 for food and housing.

The application deadline for Fellowships is March 1. Decisions on FLAS fellowships are made in late-April.

PLEASE NOTE: to minimize paperwork, only recipients of fellowships and alternates will receive formal notification. Fellowship assistance is available only to students in the 8-week session.
