Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

UPDATE 3/28/16: The Russian and East European Institute (REEI) of Indiana University (IU) expects to receive supplementary funds that may enable it to make additional Foreign Language and Area Studies awards in support of students who enroll at the IU Summer Language Workshop for Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Estonian, Lithuanian, Russian, and Ukrainian language study. For this reason, the FLAS application website has been reopened for those who were unable to submit an application by the priority deadline of February 1. The application can be accessed at:

A number of FLAS fellowships to eligible graduate and undergraduate students will be available through the Indiana University Title VI National Resource Centers for students to study most languages in the Workshop (contingent upon authorization). For eligibility requirements and to apply, visit

FLAS fellowships cover tuition costs and provide an estimated allowance of $2,500 for room/board and other costs associated with summer language study. Eligible Workshop languages for 2016 include:

  • IAUNRC: Azerbaijani, Estonian, Hungarian, Mongolian, Persian, Turkish
  • REEI: BCS (Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian), Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian, Ukrainian

The priority deadline for fellowship applications is February 1 with decisions to be made in March. After February 1 applications will be accepted for FLAS from REEI and IAURNC in the event that additional FLAS monies become available so that additional awards can be made.

Students should apply for FLAS funding from their home institutions, in addition to applying to IU for FLAS support. Please indicate if you are applying for a FLAS fellowship by checking the appropriate box on the Workshop application form.
