Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

UPDATE 4/23/15: The FLAS application has been reopened for students who wish to apply for funding through the Russian and East European Institute (REEI) that will support their study of BCS, Hungarian, Russian, and Ukrainian in the Indiana University Summer Language Workshop. A second review of applications will take place for all those who submit an FLAS application by Friday, May 1.

Applicants with transcripts, letters of recommendation and other such materials on file with a recent (submitted in 2015) FLAS academic-year application or application for graduate school study with an academic department at IU may use those for the summer application. However, it is the responsibility of the applicant to contact the FLAS center or academic department to request that such materials be forwarded to the Summer Language Workshop by campus mail, fax, or electronically:

Questions regarding eligibility may be addressed to Mark Trotter, Assistant Director REEI (812-856-5247)

A number of FLAS fellowships to eligible graduate and undergraduate students will be available through the Indiana University Title VI National Resource Centers for students to study all languages in the Workshop (contingent upon authorization). For eligibility requirements and to apply, visit http://www.indiana.edu/~flas/

FLAS fellowships cover tuition costs and provide an estimated allowance of $2,500 for room/board and other costs associated with summer language study.

The priority deadline for fellowship applications is February 8 with decisions to be made in March. After February 8 applications will be accepted for FLAS from REEI (Russian and East European languages) and IAURNC (Hungarian, Tatar, and Central Asian languages) in the event that additional FLAS monies become available so that additional awards can be made.

Students should apply for FLAS funding from their home institutions, in addition to applying to IU for FLAS support. Please indicate if you are applying for a FLAS fellowship by checking the appropriate box on the Workshop application form.

Please contact us with FLAS questions or for more information about who to contact at your home institution.
