Bloomington has been named a bicycle-friendly
community by The
League of American Bicyclists.
The IU Task Force on Sustainability Report (2007) highlights the fact
that the center of campus very accessible for both bicyclists and pedestrians.
This accessibility can continually be improved upon in order to further
sustainable transportation initiatives.
You may register
your bicycle with IU’s
Division of Transportation Services, as well as find out about bike rack locations and read up on bicycle safety tips. Also, the
Parking Operations has links to other bicycle
resources. You may also Bike
‘n’ Ride – buses in
town are equipped to carry your bicycle.
The City of Bloomington offers a Bloomington Bicycle Map that may be viewed online, which includes relevant
bicycle safety tips and bicycle laws. The City also offers bicycle safety
classes, which you can read about here, along with other important cycling information
such as the Bicycle
& Pedestrian Safety Commission.
As bicycle use increases, there is potential for increased hazard to
bicycle riders and a need for a strong bicycle safety education effort,
combined with improved infrastructure for bicycle travel. A recent internship
for the IU Office of Sustainability was devoted to developing a bike
& pedestrian infrastructure report (Bourland 2009).

*Note that his map was created in the summer of 2008
by a Sustainability Task Force summer graduate fellow and is not currently
being updated.
