About the Lab - Speech Psychophysics Laboratory

The Speech Psychophysics Laboratory (SPL) is directed by Professor Diane Kewley-Port. Dr. Kewley-Port is well known for her research in both speech perception and computer-based speech training aids. SPL has supported speech perception research for various listener groups, including persons with normal hearing or hearing impairment, and second language learners. The focus of attention has been on perception of American English vowels. Topics include discrimination of formant frequency and the modeling of that behavior in the auditory system, the importance of formant dynamics to vowel identification, and the role of vowels in clear speech and training of speech reading.

The SPL laboratory is located in room SG123 in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences. The laboratory has a large sound treated booth that can run four listeners simultaneously on four different computers. In addition there are numerous workstations for stimulus development and data analysis.
