Jump Start Training

What is SPEA's Jumpstart Program Training (JPT)?

Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) collaborates with the Intensive English Program (IEP) to offer Jumpstart Program Training (JPT), a mandatory seven-week program completed during the summer before graduate coursework begins. JPT is offered in an ungraded, supportive classroom environment and is designed to ease anxiety about starting a master's degree at SPEA.

An integral component of SPEA's master's degree programs, JPT is designed for non-native English speakers to improve written and oral communication skills, boost performance on the Indiana English Proficiency Exam* (IEPE), and become familiar with SPEA's classroom culture. Additional information is available here: http://iep.indiana.edu/programs/spea.shtml.

This Training was developed through the expertise and teaching resources provided by SPEA and IEP faculty. JPT is delivered by teaching staff from Indiana University's Intensive English Program (IEP).

Course Objectives:  To equip SPEA's non-native English speaking master's candidates with the skills necessary to succeed in the School's masters' degree programs.  Major components of the course include:

  • Interpersonal communication (including regular conversation exchanges with domestic SPEA master's students)
  • Presentations
  • Class discussion
  • Case studies and case analyses
  • Critical reviews
  • Reading strategies
  • Informal social interaction (Participants are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, such as coffee hours, a trip to the county fair, etc.)

Dates: June 30 - August 13, 2010. Classes will meet Monday through Friday for four hours daily.

Cost: The full course will cost $1,865 in tuition plus a $75 enrollment fee, payable upon registration (after arrival on the Bloomington campus).

Enrollment Procedure:

Visa Information: Participants in SPEA's Jumpstart Program Training will receive visa documents directly from Indiana University's Office of International Admissions (OIA).
