What makes for a great city? Award-winning Indianapolis Star urban affairs columnist Erika Smith offered her take on the shared ingredients of cities that are great places to work, live, and have fun. She’s an advocate of mass transit and museums and, as she says on her Twitter biography, “a lover of music, coffee, vodka, design, deep thinking and all things urban.” Erika spoke about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to Indianapolis and other major cities.

Fiscal cliff, sequestration, government shutdown. You’ve heard all those terms and heard widely varying predictions of their impact. If anyone can make sense of it, it’s Paul O’Neill. The former U.S. Treasury Secretary spoke on the economics of hospitals and addressing the problems of health care quality. O’Neill has a unique ability to explain the economy and health care in a way we can all understand and he offers the insight of a longtime corporate leader and White House insider.

SPEA in Chicago: The Promise & Perils of School Choice in Chicago
Over 100 IU alumni, friends, prospective and current SPEA students enjoyed discussions on education policy and a networking reception at the John Barleycorn- River North. SPEA Professor Ashlyn Nelson shared insights on the positive and negative outcomes of school choice, and IU alumnus Michael Milkie, superintendent of the Noble Network of Charter Schools, discussed the challenges facing public schools in Chicago. With Washington Leadership Program students and 140 alumni and friends in attendance, the 2012 Colloquium was hosted by SPEA Dean Emeritus Charles Bonser and keynote address given by Senator Richard Lugar. Senator Lugar said "SPEA makes such a difference." Read more and view event photos.

SPEA’s first annual career expo for students was held at DeVault Alumni Center, Bloomington, IN. Over 35 employers (many with SPEA alumni representatives) from Indianapolis and Bloomington attended.

The Midwest-focused SPEA Alumni Association online auction generated $2,300 in proceeds for student scholarships! The SPEA Alumni Association Scholarship Fund awards deserving undergraduate and graduate students on both the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses $1,000-scholarships toward their studies at SPEA.

SPEA Auction and Gala
The SPEA Auction and Gala is completely organized by the students for the students. With over 353 attendees, this year’s event raised more than $10,000. The proceeds will support 3-5 graduate level students embarking on summer internships and professional development experiences both domestically and abroad.
