Eli Lilly and Company Foundation gives $1 million for public health school
Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie this week announced that a $1 million gift from the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation has been received to support efforts to plan and begin to establish an accredited school of public health at IUPUI. In response to the public health needs in Indiana, IUPUI is building a new school of public health by bringing together faculty from the schools of medicine, public and environmental affairs and other schools. Sevilla named to Division of Diversity Affairs
Javier F. Sevilla Martír, MD, has joined the Division of Diversity Affairs team as an assistant dean for diversity affairs, according to Associate Dean for Diversity Affairs George Rausch, EdD. The Division of Diversity Affairs is a newly created division within the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development. Dr. Sevilla brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the team with his background in recruitment and development of underrepresented faculty. Dr. Sevilla is an associate professor of clinical family medicine and director of Hispanic/Latino Health, Global Health and International Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine. He also is the faculty advisor for the Society of Latino medical students. After joining the IU Department of Family Medicine in 2002, he completed a one-year faculty development fellowship in underserved medicine leadership. He focused on minority health with emphasis on quality of care and health disparities, cultural competence and medical Spanish. Dr. Sevilla earned his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras in 1993 and completed his residency training as a family physician at IU in 2002.

America's Top Doctors for Cancer recognizes 19 at IU
The 19 are among 26 in Indiana included in the fifth edition of America's Top Doctors for Cancer. The current guide identifies the nation's most outstanding physicians for the diagnosis and treatment of cancers in adults and children. The physicians are:
Published by Castle Connolly, the guide contains detailed profiles of more than 2,200 of America's leading cancer specialists across more than 40 medical specialties. The doctors are selected by a physician-led research team based on comprehensive national surveys of physicians and medical leaders.

Research Funding Update
The IU Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research offer a weekly digest containing information about funding opportunities including those that limit the number of allowable pre-proposal or proposal submissions. Signature Centers proposal deadline changed
The deadline for the submission of the proposals under the Round 3 Signature Centers Initiative has been changed from Jan. 22 to Thursday, April 1. This change is reflected in the updated document for the Round 3 call for proposals which can be accessed at research.iupui.edu/funding/. April 1 also is the deadline for the Round 1 centers to submit their third and final year activity reports and for any Round 1 centers wishing to submit a proposal for receiving extended funding past their first 3 years. The Round 2 centers deadline for the submission of their second year activity report is Thursday, July 15.

Showalter Trust applications due Jan. 11
Since 1975, the Indianapolis campus of IUSM has received research funding through gifts made possible from the Ralph W. and Grace M. Showalter Research Trust Fund. The areas of appropriate biomedical research eligible for funding are broad and described by the benefactors as “the type of medical research that is most likely to permanently benefit mankind.” Applications for funding from the Ralph W. and Grace M. Showalter Research Trust will be reviewed in two stages. An initial review by the IUSM Biomedical Research Committee will select the most meritorious proposals for further discussion and ranking. The BRC will then provide a recommended ranking to the Showalter Trustees who conduct a second review. Final funding decisions are made by the Showalter Trustees. Applications for funding that begins July 1 must be received via email by the IUSM Office of Operations by 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 11. Predoctoral training awards in translational research
Funding is for two years (with the 2nd year of funding contingent upon satisfactory progress). Benefits include a full stipend as well as health insurance, partial coverage of tuition and fees, and access to travel funds. IUSM community invited to attend curricular change discussions
All IUSM faculty, staff and students are invited to join in conversation to discuss goals and visions for IUSM curricular change. These will be open dialogues designed to provide an opportunity for the IUSM community to meet and discuss curricular change directions in all four years. Statewide curricular change conversations will be held the first Monday and third Wednesday of each month beginning Monday, Jan. 4, from noon to 1 p.m. in VanNuys Medical Science Building, room B11, and on video bridge 104. If phoning in, call 812-856-7060 and enter conference code “104” when prompted. The second discussion will be on the fourth Wednesday in January instead of the third Wednesday due to a scheduling conflict. All other Wednesday discussions will remain on the third Wednesday, so mark your calendar. All of the curriculum discussions will be from noon to 1 p.m. in Medical Science Building, room B11, and the same video bridge and phone number will be used. Feel free to attend any or all of the events. Hear what's being discussed around campus and share your viewpoints and ideas. IU Foundation clarifies gift deadlines
Faculty and staff who support IU through year-end gifts to the IU Foundation should be aware of the following criteria for a gift to qualify for 2009 tax credit. ALL of the criteria must be met in order for a gift to qualify for 2009 tax credit. Gifts can be made online; however, the deadline for making an online gift via credit card is noon Eastern time on Dec. 31. Center for Medical Genomics hosts seminar
The IUSM Center for Medical Genomics is hosting a seminar given by Applied Biosystems on Tuesday, Dec. 15. Lunch will be served at 11:30 and the seminar will be from noon to 1 p.m. in Walther Hall (R3), room 203. Applied Biosystems SOLiD 3Plus Next Gen Sequencing Applications will present recent developments and applications on the SOLiD 3-Plus™ System. With greater than 60GB quality reads, 1 billion tags, exceptional accuracy, and supported application chemistry kits, the SOLiD 3-Plus System enables a variety of research applications. Topics will include the SOLiD 3-Plus system advancements, as well as applications including small/miRNA analysis, whole transcriptome analysis, whole genome resequencing, targeted resequencing, expression profiling, chromatin immunoprecipitation, rearrangements, SNP’s, and methylation analysis. H1N1 flu clinic for medical students
Supplies of H1N1 vaccine have improved significantly in the last two weeks. IUPUI Health Services will be holding a special flu clinic for IUSM students in the Daly Center student lounge/mailboxes area from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16. In addition, IUPUI Health Services has H1N1 vaccine available in its Coleman Hall clinic and at additional on-site clinics. Information about the flu clinics can be found at www.health.iupui.edu. IUSM medical students who have not already received the H1N1 vaccine are strongly encouraged to get the vaccine as soon as possible. Though the second wave of H1N1 is fading, public health experts expect there to be a third wave of H1N1 sometime during the early part of 2010. All those who fall into an H1N1 vaccine priority group, including medical students, are strongly encouraged to receive the vaccine.

Alternative Spring Break: Physicians need for Honduras 2010
The Alternative Spring Break Honduras 2010 program is a week-long medical mission to the coastal town of Trujillo and the nearby village of Rigores, where a team of IUSM physicians and students will provide primary care, present public health seminars, and work hand in hand with local health care providers to administer excellent care to the people of Honduras. As part of the inaugural trip last year, the group helped treat more than 1,000 patients with illnesses ranging from scabies to diabetes to hydrocephalus. Additionally, the group offered other services such as fluoride treatments and eyeglass fittings. Plans are underway to expand the trip from last year, and physicians interested in taking part in the trip from March 6-13 are encouraged to contact one of the co-chairs. Physicians can expect to work alongside enthusiastic MSI and MSII students, educating future Hoosier doctors while also providing Honduran patients excellent care in the tradition of IUSM. Clarian Health neurosurgeon to appear on CBS’ The Doctors
A Clarian Health neurosurgeon will appear on an upcoming episode of CBS’ medically-themed talk show The Doctors. The episode will feature a segment focusing on Clarian Health neurosurgeon Dr. Aaron Cohen-Gadol and the Clarian neuroscience team’s successful attempt to perform a risky, yet life-saving surgical procedure on a 15-month-old child from Bosnia who was brought to Methodist Hospital with a debilitating neurological condition that caused him to suffer more than 100 seizures a day. The show will also feature Dr. Cohen as an in-studio guest discussing the hemispherotomy procedure— where neurosurgeons disconnect the two hemispheres of the brain so that one hemisphere begins to assume control for both sides of the body—and explaining how the child’s life will be different now that he is seizure-free. The episode will air Monday, Dec. 14 on WISH-TV 8 at 4 p.m.

2010 Summer Cancer Research Fellowships
The Summer Cancer Research Fellowship program provides a unique opportunity for eligible current sophomore or junior undergraduate students to engage in innovative integrative biology approaches to cancer research through the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Integrative Cancer Biology Program (ICBP). The ICBP, composed of nine multi-disciplinary centers across the country, focuses on the analysis of cancer using systems biology approaches. Researchers within each ICBP Center utilize the integration of experimental biology with mathematical and computational modeling to gain new insights into the biology and management of cancer. Selected student participants are paired with a faculty-mentor from a participating ICBP Center based on the student’s indicated research interests. Through mentored research projects, faculty lectures, seminars, discussions and other activities, the student gains both an understanding and appreciation of major questions currently under investigation and the novel research approaches being used within the ICBP Centers. The program begins June 7 and ends August 6. However, some centers have modified start/end dates based on the individual institution’s summer calendars. Honors
Martin A. Friedman, chief operating officer for the IU Department of Medicine, has received best in show honors at the Indianapolis Art Center’s annual juried student show, which opened in late November and will run through January 16. The “Best in Show” award covers all adult student work that was accepted into the show. The winner is a raku-fired ceramic piece titled “The Cracked Shell.” The award entitles Friedman to a solo show which will be on display during the months of August and September. Theresa A. Guise, MD, has been recognized by the University of Pittsburgh as one of 12 new Legacy Laureates, alumni recognized for their outstanding personal and professional accomplishments. The laureates were honored during Pitt's Homecoming festivities in October. Dr. Guise is a new faculty member at IUSM and is an expert on metabolic bone disease with an emplasis on skeletal complications of malignancy and the effect of cancer treatments on the bone. She is the Jerry and Peg Throgmartin Professor of Oncology and a professor of medicine at IUSM. Two Riley Hospital and Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research physicians have been awarded membership in the prestigious American Society for Clinical Investigation. Laura Haneline, MD, associate professor in pediatrics (neonatology) and Raghu Mirmira, MD, PhD, associate professor of pediatrics and of medicine (endocrinology) were two of only 79 individuals internationally that were selected for induction this year. ASCI is a honor society of physician scientists who translate findings in the laboratory into advancements in clinical practice. Members are selected on the basis of their achievements in biomedical research and must be under 45 years of age at the time of their nomination. Dr. Haneline and Dr. Mirmira join 24 other physicians from IU who have been awarded this honor. John Kincaid, MD, the Kenneth L. and Selma G. Earnest Professor of Neurology, is the recipient of the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine 2009 Distinguished Physician Award in recognition of superior achievement as a clinician and educator and for his overall support of association activities. Linda H. Malkas, MD, the Vera Bradley Professor of Oncology and a professor of medicine, has been appointed to the editorial board of the journal Cancer Research. Her three-year appointment begins in January. Douglas B. McKeag, M.D., M.S., OneAmerica Professor of Preventive Health Medicine and director of the IU Center for Sports Medicine, led a delegation of 28 sports medicine physicians and professionals from 19 states to China Nov. 9-21. The delegation visited and exchanged lectures in Beijing, Guilin and Shanghai. While in Beijing, the delegation met with the China Sport Science Society, Peking University Hospital, and Beijing Sports University. In Guilin, they met with the Guangxi Provincial University and TCM Hospital, and in Shanghai, the group meet with the Research Institute of Shanghai University. This is the first such sports medicine delegation to visit China since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Gail Habegger Vance, MD, was recently re-elected as a governor of the College of American Pathologists at a ceremony held at CAP ’09 – The Pathologists’ Meeting in Washington, D.C. Dr. Vance is a professor in the departments of medical and molecular genetics and laboratory medicine and pathology and is the director of Genetics Testing Laboratories at IUSM.
