This year, the Minority Faculty Fellowship Program plays host to six fellows-five during the summer
of 1998 and one who will arrive on campus for the 1998-99 academic year.
The School of Education was fortunate this year to be able to host three
of this year's summer fellows. Sheri Hamilton took a break from her position
at Butler University in Indianapolis to return to Bloomington to develop
and teach a course for the Department of Special Education, while M. Christopher
Brown, II and Jeanett Castellanos each taught a course for the Higher Education
Department. Candida Jaquez returns once again to IU, heading south from
the University of Michigan where she is finishing her degree in Ethnomusicology.
She was hosted by the Folklore Institute. The School of Journalism welcomed
Vera Walker who taught a summer course on images of gender and race in
the media.
Also included in this issue of the MFFP Newsletter is Manuel Martinez, a scholar of Chicana/o and Beat Generation literature. Martinez taught for the English Department during the 1997-98 academic year. Martinez has since accepted a permanent tenure-track position with that department.
Other good news for MFFP is that Quinton Dixie, one of last summer's fellows, has joined the Religious Studies Department as an Assistant Professor. A native of Indiana, Dixie is thrilled to be moving home, and IU is just as pleased to have him.
MFFP also looks forward to welcoming renowned printer and artist Amos Kennedy as an academic year fellow for the School of Fine Arts. A more in-depth profile of Amos Kennedy will appear in next summer's issue of the MFFP newsletter.
