Ten Fellows Make their Mark at IU

This year, the Minority Faculty Fellowship Program almost doubled the number of participating fellows from six in 1996 to ten in 1997. In addition to one academic-year fellow who is scheduled to arrive in the fall (and who will be profiled in next year's issue of the newsletter), the program hosted nine summer fellows. As a kind of repeat performance, 1996 fellows Keith Harrison and Norma-Martinez Rogers have returned to MFFP this summer to develop further courses and projects they began last year. Martinez-Rogers took a break from the San Antonio sun and her job at the University of Texas to join us here at IU, while Harrison spent a few weeks with us, teaching a course and preparing to begin his new job at the University of Michigan.

Also included in this issue of the MFFP Newsletter is Luis A. Gonzalez, a Research Associate for the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and an academic-year Minority Faculty Fellow for 1997. Gonzalez taught his course on Latin American history at IU during the Spring semester while continuing work on his dissertation for his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.

MFFP also welcomes seven summer fellows who are new to the program. Quinton Dixie was the first fellow ever to be hosted by the Department of Religious Studies. To IU's good fortune, Dixie has accepted that department's invitation to remain in here as guest lecturer for the coming academic year. Other departments represented by the program this year include: African American Studies; Counseling and Educational Psychology; Educational Leadership; History; Political Science and the School of Nursing.
