Bloomington provides ideal home for MFFP

The Minority Faculty Fellowship Program has had one of its busiest seasons this year, sponsoring eight summer fellows and one academic-year fellow, who will be featured in the next issue of this newsletter.

Fellows unanimously voiced appreciation for the intellectual opportunities and resources they encountered at I.U. Bloomington, but the story does not end there. In addition to housing a university, the city of Bloomington presents an uncommon mix of cultural and recreational diversions, as our visitors discovered.

One MFFP fellow, after arriving from a bustling east-coast city for her summer stay in the Midwest, admitted that early on "it was difficult adjusting to the pace of Bloomington," but concludes that "it was a refreshing change."

Refreshing for one may have proven busy enough for others; in any case, our 1995 Minority Faculty Fellows kept moving during their six- to eight-week stays at I.U.

Frances Gateward explored our small city on a $5 bicycle, acquired at I.U.'s annual bike auction in May.

Valerie Maholmes enjoyed the Summer Jazz Series. David Padgett took advantage of the opportunity to attend events at the Indiana Black Expo.

Everyone tried out the restaurants. And this was in their spare time. For profiles of our eight fellows and the work they did at I.U. this summer, read on.
