Geographer explores Indiana

Photo: David Padgett Up from Nashville, Tennessee, where he's taught Geography at Austin Peay State University since January 1994, David Padgett joined IU-Bloomington's Geography department for the second summer session 1995. Mr. Padgett taught "Environmental Conservation" to eighteen graduate and undergraduate students and began several projects during his stay, including an article on environmental justice for Geo Info Systems and another for The Environmental Professional. Recipient of the Association of American Geographers' 1994 Paul P. Vouras Fund Dissertation Grant for his doctoral project, "Applications of Geographical Information Systems for Tracking Childhood Lead Poisoning Sources," Mr. Padgett expects to complete his degree in Geography and Geology at the University of Florida this year.

During his stay in Indiana, Mr. Padgett took advantage of the opportunity to attend several events at the Indiana Black Expo '95 in Indianapolis. Pleased to have been a part of the Minority Faculty Fellowship Program, he comments that "the only way that the high attrition rates for African American students may be abated is via efforts such as this program, which are aimed at increasing minority representation among university faculty."
