Valerie Maholmes found herself plunged head-first into teaching when
she arrived at the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology
in the second summer session, 1995. Along with co-teacher Curtis Bonk
of the School of Education, Dr. Maholmes led a workshop entitled
"Alternative Instructional Strategies: Critical, Creative,
Cooperative" for an intensive two-week session, during which she
met with her students four hours every day. Once through this
demanding course, Dr. Maholmes found time to develop her other
professional concerns. In the weeks following her teaching assignment
she presented and continued work on her research with the Comer School
Development Program at Yale University.
She speaks highly of the community she found at I.U.: "The program afforded me the opportunity to work and interact with scholars who are nationally recognized for their work." She was especially pleased with an environment that enabled her and the other fellows "to share ideas, discuss issues concerning our professional development, and to support one another in our work this summer." An Associate Research Scientist serving in various coordinating capacities at the Yale Child Study Center in New Haven, Connecticut since 1993, Dr. Maholmes began at Yale as a Post Doctoral Fellow in 1992-93. Dr. Maholmes received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Howard University in Washington D.C. in 1991. |
