Frances Gateward joined the faculty of the Comparative Literature
Department for the first summer session of 1995. During her stay,
she taught a combined undergraduate- and graduate-level course on
women and film.
Ms. Gateward, currently finishing her dissertation "Addressing Racism and Sexism through Cinematic Discourse: An Analysis of Films by Contemporary African-American Women Filmmakers," will receive her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland College Park in Film Theory and Criticism, with a minor in Women's Studies. She has served as an Assistant Professor in the School of Communications at The American University in Washington D.C. since the fall of 1994. In addition to her work as a film theorist and critic, Ms. Gateward has done award-winning work in film production, most notably as writer, producer, director and editor of Basta!, a thirty minute documentary on human rights abuses in Chile. Basta! was recognized by CINE in 1989 and at the 1988 National Educational Film and Video Festival. More recently, Ms. Gateward has completed a documentary for the American Association of University Women. Citing the cultural and academic diversity of IU students and their willingness to engage in discussions that challenge their beliefs, Ms. Gateward refers to her time in Bloomington as "the most positive teaching experience of my entire academic career." |
