The Crusades: Books

The following books are to be purchased, and are available at TIS and the bookstore:

  • Schlomo Eidelberg, The Jews and the Crusaders: The Hebrew Chronicles of the First and Second Crusades
  • Francesco Gabrieli, Arab Historians of the Crusades
  • Amin Maalouf, The Crusades Through Arab Eyes
  • Thomas Madden, A Short History of the Crusades
  • Helen J. Nicholson, The Chronicle of the Third Crusade: The Itinerarium Peregrimorum et Gesta Regis Ricardi
  • Edward Peters, The First Crusade
  • D. S. Richards, The Rare and Excellent History of Saladin or al-Nawâdir al-Sultâniyya wa'l-Mahâsin al-Yûsufiyya by Bahâ' al-Dîn Ibn Shaddâd

Other texts will be on-line and can be accessed through the calendar page of the course web site or the readings index. These readings are not openly accessible, so you will have to sign in using your IU username and password (and no, this does not mean that I will have access to your password).

Some students in the past have complained about the cost of printing out materials from the Internet and have indicated a preference for a reader. I like the convenience of having materials available at any time of the day or night and for free if you wish (you can read the texts on-line). And if I ordered books, they too would cost money. If you print out the pages, you'll pay less than you would for a textbook, including the paltry sum you would get if you sold it back to the bookstore.
