Eligibility Requirements

  • Students must have a 2011-2012 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file to be considered for summer aid. The FAFSA may be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. An additional Summer Aid Application is not required. Students will be evaluated for summer financial aid after they are enrolled in summer classes.
  • Undergraduates must be enrolled in a total of at least six credit hours during the summer to receive summer aid.
  • Graduate students must be enrolled in a total of at least four credit hours during the summer to receive summer aid.
  • Students must be meeting satisfactory academic progress in order to be considered for summer aid. Students should review the satisfactory academic progress requirements at www.indiana.edu/~sfa/receiving/sap.html.
  • Students who are attending classes at another IU campus must have an approved consortium in addition to meeting the other eligibility requirements. Also, some overseas study courses may require a consortium. Consortium information may be found at www.indiana.edu/~sfa/applying/consortiums.html.
  • Students who are planning to use CVO (Child of Veteran or Public Safety Officer) eligibility for the summer must have a valid FAFSA for the 2012-2013 academic year on file prior to June 30, 2012.

Availability of Summer Aid

  • Students who received Federal Stafford Loans up to their full annual eligibility during the previous academic year semesters are not eligible for Federal Stafford Loans in the summer. Borrower eligibility for Federal Stafford loans will begin again the following academic year.
  • For most students, summer aid consists of private student loans and/or Federal Parent/Graduate PLUS Loans.  More information about these loans can be found at www.indiana.edu/~sfa/types/loans.html.
  • Undergraduate students who received a less than full-time Pell Grant during the 2011-2012 academic year may be eligible to receive a Pell Grant during the summer.
  • Any change in enrollment could result in a change to your financial aid eligibility. Decreases in enrolled credit hours, non-attendance in a class, or a total or unofficial withdrawal from summer classes may result in changes to your aid. You may lose eligibility for aid you've already received, including returning funds already received. We may also cancel any pending disbursements, and/or deny the processing of any new loan requests.
  • Undergraduate Indiana residents who qualify for aid from the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (SSACI) may be eligible to receive summer funding. For Summer 2012, SSACI summer aid is restricted to the Child of Certain Veteran and Public Safety Officers Supplemental Grant Program (CVO), the Part-time Grant Program, and Minority Teacher/Special Education Services Scholarships. You can review the requirements for each program on the SSACI website. Please note that use of SSACI aid during the summer term will count toward your four years of total eligibility.
