Summer Dutch at Indiana University

Esther Ham

The curriculum for intermediate summer Dutch has been developed by Esther Ham, Director of Indiana University's Dutch Program since 2001. Ham has over 20 years experience teaching Dutch language and culture in several other countries including her homeland in the Netherlands as well as Hungary, France, Indonesia, South Africa, and most recently the United States.

Her experience, knowledge, and overall enthusiasm for the teaching of all things Dutch make a great atmosphere in which to learn the Dutch language and Dutch history, literature, and culture.

Bieneke Haitjema

Bieneke Haitjema (doctorandus, University of Utrecht) is a native speaker of Dutch with extensive experience in teaching English as a foreign Language to Dutch learners and other non-native speakers of English. Her teaching career started in the Netherlands after completing her graduate studies in English as well as Linguistics, which focused on phonetics and phonology. Her research was published in Language and Speech and the Journal of Experimental Phonetics. Bieneke is interested in all aspects of adult second-language acquisition, particularly second language phonology. She has taught language classes in a variety of academic and community settings in the US for the last 15 years and is currently a lecturer of Dutch Language and Culture at IU’s Germanic Studies department.
