• Director: Charles D. Beeker has been directing the Academic Diving Program since 1984 and the Underwater Science Program since 1991. Mr. Beeker, a Registered Profesional Archaeologist, has been a faculty member with the School of Health Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) since 1980 and has lead numerous underwater research projects throughout the United States and Caribbean.

• Research Associate: Ania Budziak has received Master Degrees in Environmental Policy and Environmental Science from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) and assists in all aspects of program management and development. As a PADI Assistant Instructor, Ania assists in teaching scuba related courses as well as in design and implementation of underwater field projects.
  

• Diving Safety Officer: Nicole Wiegand is a graduate student at the IU School of Education. As a PADI instructor, Nicole teaches scuba certification courses and is responsible for the administration of the Academic Diving Program. As an undergraduate, Nicole was among the first IU students to obtain the Underwater Resource Management Certificate, and has participated in numerous IU research projects.
  
  
• Director of Field Research/Lecturer: Frederick (Fritz) Hanselmann holds a master's degree and is completing a doctorate in archaeology.  He is a Research Associate with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M University.  Fritz is currently working on projects in the Dominican Republic, Panama, Florida, and California. His research focuses on the shipwrecks and submerged sites of the contact period as well as the archaeology of piracy. He is also a certified PADI Instructor.

  Undergraduate Research Assistants

• Josh Stewart is studying Marine Biology through the Individualized Major Program.  He is a research assistant in the Underwater Science lab and has worked with IU on research projects in the Florida Keys and Dominican Republic.  Josh recently returned from Australia where he worked with researches from James Cook University on behavioral trends in juvenile fish.

• James Zeigler is currently working towards his BS in Environmental Science through the College of Arts and Sciences with a concentration in freshwater ecosystem science.  He is also working on a certificate in Underwater Resource Management and is a certified PADI Rescue diver working towards his Divemaster certification. His senior research project is focusing on the biodiversity and water quality of freshwater caverns in Southeastern Dominican Republic.

• Mylana Haydu is a senior who is currently working towards a double major in Psychology and Anthropology through the College of Arts and Sciences.  In addition, she is acquiring a Certificate in Underwater Resource Management through the School of HPER.  She is a certified PADI diver who has completed various other PADI certifications offered through courses at Indiana University.  She is also working toward her Divemaster certification.  Mylana aspires to have a career in which the use of scientific Scuba is utilized to protect environmental resources, specifically coastal and marine resources.

• Nathan Johnson is a Sophomore duel majoring in History and Underwater Archaeology through the Individualized Major Program.  He’s working on his advanced open water certification, and plans to continue towards a divemaster certification.  His main research interests are in the Great Lakes region.
