Judy thinks big. Her major projects are hugely ambitious. But like everyone else, she has to start somewhere.

"Trials and Tributes: A Judy Chicago Retrospective" (Works on Paper) will be on view at the Indiana University Art Museum from September 1 - October 31, 1999, while Judy Chicago is in residence as a Visiting Artist/Author at IU for Fall Semester, 1999. The exhibit traces Chicago's career from the 1960s -- her early California days where she founded the first feminist art programs in the United States -- to the present. It includes artworks from The Dinner Party, Birth Project, Powerplay, Holocaust Project, The Autobiography of a Year, and Song of Songs, as well as works independent of larger projects.

Chicago has worked since the '60s to eradicate the neglect of imagery from a female point of view. This viewpoint includes a perspective on personal identity, the nature of art, and issues traditionally considered political. The author of seven books, she has investigated the foundations of feminist art and explored issues of gender and ethnicity. A monograph on Judy Chicago and her career is forthcoming by art critic Edward Lucie-Smith (Watson-Guptill Publications, 1999).

"Trials and Tributes: A Judy Chicago Retrospective" was curated by Dr. Viki D. Thompson Wylder of Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts, where the show opens on February 19, 1999.

Exhibit of Artworks by students of Judy Chicago's Project Class U750/U450 (School of Fine Arts, IUB)
December 10-16, 1999

At the end of the Fall semester, 1999, 15 students participating in Judy Chicago's intensive project class will exhibit their works at the IU Art Museum during Final Exam Week. The class will be facilitated by Judy Chicago who will guide students in art-making, from personal content to public presentation. Students will work either individually or collaboratively during the term and will be exposed to the process of documentation of the process and of the work, which will then become a component in the exhibition. The intention of the project is to help students understand what it takes to succeed at professional art practice and to help them build confidence in their own interests and directions.
