Faculty:
Indiana University Visiting Instructor, artist, and author Judy Chicago
Professor Peg Brand (Gender Studies, Philosophy, IUB)
Professor Jean Robertson (Art History, Herron School of Art, IUPUI)

This class will be team-taught under 3 separate course listings by artist/author Judy Chicago, philosopher Peg Brand (IUB), and art historian Jean Robertson (IUPUI), and will explore the history and theoretical foundations of the concept of "feminist art:" the lack of consensus in defining the term in spite of recurring subject matter and ideological perspectives.

We will explore such questions as: How is feminist art to be defined? Is feminist art only made by women? Is feminist art only intended for a female audience? Must its subject matter be exclusively issues of female identity?

A portion of the class will be based upon a book written by Chicago and Edward Lucie-Smith entitled, Women in Art: Contested Territory (forthcoming, Watson-Guptill Publications, Fall 1999) which presents images of women in western art by both male and female artists and the struggle over the representation of the female body.

The classroom experience will be augmented by:

Required reading before start of semester:

(available from www.judychicago.com)
Lucy R. Lippard, Pink Glass Swan: Selected Essays on Feminist Art (NY:New Press, 1995)
