Dominican Republic Verso Illustration
The verso (swivel gun) was mounted on a pivoting frame and located on
the gunnel of the ship. Like the bombard, it was also breech loaded.
The verso ranged from 4 to 10ft and fired stone or iron balls of 3.5
inches in diameter. Virtually every sailing ship of the era was equipped
with a number of these effective short range weapons. (illustration
