Dominican Republic Verso Illustration

The verso (swivel gun) was mounted on a pivoting frame and located on the gunnel of the ship. Like the bombard, it was also breech loaded. The verso ranged from 4 to 10ft and fired stone or iron balls of 3.5 inches in diameter. Virtually every sailing ship of the era was equipped with a number of these effective short range weapons.
