The USCG John C. Spencer (WPG-36) is one of seven ships built as part of the
Treasury Class 327's. Her sister ships are the Roger B. Taney (WPG-37),
George W Campbell (WPG 35), William J Duane, Alexander Hamilton, and
the Samuel D. Ingham. She was launched on the 6th of January 1936, and
commissioned on March 1, 1937 for use as part of the U.S. Navy during
World War II. Built as a high endurance cutter, its speed and agility was
coupled with heavy armament, ranging from machine guns, six pound guns,
and turrets, to anti-submarine depth charges, and Mark 44 torpedoes. With
this armament, the USCG Spencer battled a German U-boat on April 17,
