Purpose/Overview
Year 1
Year 2
Year 3
Proposed Year 4

In Fall 1998, TimeWeb was used for the first time as part of a regular archeology course. Part of the implementation of TimeWeb included evaluation studies of the effectiveness of the tool. The developers and instructor wanted to know how students were using TimeWeb, individually and in groups, what sorts of visualization opportunities the software offered them, and what kinds of critical thinking and problem-solving skills TimeWeb helped to foster. Rockman et al, an educational evaluation company with offices in San Francisco, Chicago, and Bloomington, IN, was retained to head the evaluation studies, which would cover at least three years.

PURPOSE/OVERVIEW: Evaluation studies were undertaken every semester that TimeWeb was used in the classroom.

YEAR 1 : TimeWeb was used in P200: Introduction to Prehistoric Archaeology in the Fall 1998 and Spring 1999 semesters.

YEAR 2 : TimeWeb was used in the 1999 Fall semester in P380: Prehistoric Diet. In Spring 2000, TimeWeb was used with three groups of students in a one-time session.

YEAR 3 : In Fall 2000, TimeWeb was used in P314: African Prehistory.

PROPOSED YEAR 4: TimeWeb will be used in A105: Human Origins and
Prehistory in the 2001 Fall semester and in an undergraduate course on African prehistory at Berkley where Professor Sept will be teaching in Spring 2002.
