In Fall 1998, TimeWeb
was used for the first time as part of a regular archeology course. Part
of the implementation of TimeWeb included evaluation studies of the effectiveness
of the tool. The developers and instructor wanted to know how students
were using TimeWeb, individually and in groups, what sorts of visualization
opportunities the software offered them, and what kinds of critical thinking
and problem-solving skills TimeWeb helped to foster. Rockman
et al, an educational evaluation company with offices in San Francisco,
Chicago, and Bloomington, IN, was retained to head the evaluation studies,
which would cover at least three years.
