Black Oak, Quercitron Scientific Name: Quercus velutina Description: One of the finest and largest eastern oaks, commonly 50-70' and in favorable situations 160' high, with a trunk diameter of 6'. Bark deep warm gray, or sometimes nearly sepia, thick, very rough, broken into short, thick ridges, more or less rounded. The branches light gray brown, stout and spreading, smooth, forming in this open a symmetrical figure. Habitat: Common on dry, gravelly uplands. Range: Southern Maine west to central Minnesota, and south to northern Florida. Southwest it extends to eastern Kansas, Oklahoma and eastern Texas.
