Blackgum, Pepperidge, Tupelo Scientific Name: Nyssa sylvatica Description: Commonly a small tree 20-50' but occasionally 100' high in the south, with a trunk diameter of 4'. The stems ascending continuously to the crown, the branches slender and nearly horizontal. Bark brown gray lighter or sometimes blackened, smoothish, or rough with an indistinct perpendicular trend, the furrows and ridges on older trees deeply scored and confluent. Habitat: Found along water courses on rich alluvial land or in swamps. Range: Maine west to Missouri and Michigan, south to central Florida and to the Brazos River, Texas.
