Bitternut Hickory, Swamp Hickory Scientific Name: Carya cordiformis Description: A tall tree of swamps 50-75' and sometimes 100' high, with a trunk diameter of 4, the branches slender, ascending, dropping below, forming a narrow-topped head. Bark thin, light brown or warm brown gray, shallowly and finely fissured, the ridges strongly confluent, separating into somewhat thin flakes. The twigs buff. Habitat: Common in rich woodlands or in various soils. Range: East to Nebraska and Texas, south to Florida, norht to Maine. Type: Tree Source:Field Book of American Trees and Shrubs by F.
