Water Plantain
Scientific Name: Alisma subcordatum
Family: Alismataceae
Description: Tall, spindly, many-branched plant with small white (rarely pink) flowers arranged in whorls
Habitat: Shallow water in freshwater marshes, sluggish streams, edges of ponds and lakes
Range: Northeast United States and southeast Canada
Comments: Lower part is often submerged while the upper part is exposed. Submerged root-like structure is edible; it was dried and eaten by the Indians.
