Equity Project Director Russell Skiba, and Sandy Washburn of the IU Center for Education and Lifelong Learning both presented information about school discipline to the Indiana General Assembly for its Education Study Committee today. The committee met to discuss student discipline and the suspension, expulsion, or exclusion of students from school. Dr. Skiba testified about national trends in school discipline and their implications for Indiana. He told the committee zero tolerance discipline policies and the overuse of out-of-school suspensions lead students to disengage from academics, drop out, and even commit crimes.
