In 1988, the Office for Women’s Affairs established the Distinguished Scholar Award to honor faculty on the Bloomington campus. Previous winners are: Margaret Intons-Peterson, Susan Gubar, Winona Lee Fletcher, Martha McCarthy, Helen Nader, Karen Hanson, Judith Hanson, Mary Jo Weaver, Fedwa Malti-Douglas, Moya Andrews, Susan Williams, Lisa Pratt, Chris Ogan, Julia Lamber, Phyllis Martin, Rosemary Lloyd, Meredith West, Mariana Kielian-Gilbert, Linda S. Smith, Maura Stanton and Portia Maultsby.

A committee representing a range of scholarly disciplines and interests is appointed annually by the Dean for Women’s Affairs to select the recipient. The committee invites your nominations for the award. The OWA Distinguished Scholar receives $1,000 and an inscribed plaque at a special recognition ceremony.

Criteria: The primary criterion for the award is outstanding scholarship and/or creative work, as recognized by peers at the university and in the candidate’s profession. While the quality and substance of the candidate’s contributions to scholarship or creative work are the primary criteria, the committee also looks for evidence of involvement in efforts to enhance women’s lives through research, teaching, or service.

Eligibility: All faculty members on the Bloomington campus are eligible for nomination. It should be noted that it would be unusual, although not impossible, for candidates who have not yet attained the rank of full professor to have accumulated the record of research or creative activity, teaching, and service that would make them competitive for the award.
