Hoosier views

Each issue of this year's IU Home Pages features a mystery image. Can you pinpoint these IU landmarks? We’ve provided answers to give you a jump on finding these IU treasures during your treks around the state. Think you have a great “Hoosier view” photo? Send us a tip and we’ll stump your colleagues. 

The Sept. 10 "Hoosier view" is a photo of Nan Deitert's 1972 untitled sculpture. It can be seen at IU Bloomington next to the School of Fine Arts, on the side entrance near the Radio-TV Services building near the library parking lot.

The Sept. 24 “Hoosier view” is a detail from a life-sized bas-relief. The memorial artwork is in the lobby of the Medical Library and Research Building at the IU School of Medicine on the IUPUI campus. It honors Indiana Medical College founder, Dr. John Stough Bobbs. Bobbs performed the world’s first gall bladder surgery in 1867. The memorial was crafted by artist Gutzon Borglum in 1916. Borglum later created Mount Rushmore. 

Answer: The Oct. 8 "Hoosier view" is a detail from the wellhouse on the IU Kokomo campus. It is located near the Kokomo Creek, at the back of campus. The stone and wood structure was moved in 1965, from IU Kokomo's former Sycamore Street location.

Answer: The Oct. 22 “Hoosier view” is a detail of Harold “Tuck” Langland’s Crossroads. The sculpture and fountain are located near the Student Activity Center on the IU South Bend campus. Langland, a professor of fine arts, retired in 2003. He also crafted IU Bloomington’s Herman B Wells memorial sculpture. The new water feature includes the fountain itself as well as two figures.

Answer: The Nov. 12 "Hoosier view" is a photo of Bloomington's Memorial Stadium. The photo highlights the letter "I" located on the window of the stadium's box seats.

Answer: The Dec. 10 "Hoosier view" is from a carved wooden statue resting high on a ledge in the Tudor Room of the Indiana Memorial Union in Bloomington.

Answer: Feb. 11 "Hoosier view" showcases a ground-floor seating area at the Musical Arts Center on the Bloomington campus. The MAC's opera theater seats 1,460 and provides room for a 100-piece orchestra. It is also home to studios, classrooms and practice facilities for rising opera and ballet stars.

Answer: Feb. 25“Hoosier view” details Lady in the Sun, a statue by Pino Conte, 1961, located near the north wall of Raintree Hall on the campus of IU Northwest.
Answer: The April 22 "Hoosier view" showcases IU Kokomo's library spiral staircase and skylight.
Answer: The May 13 "Hoosier view" details the Arboretum fence row west of the Herman B Wells Library on the Bloomington campus.
ANSWER: The May 27 "Hoosier view" details the Student Legacy 25th Anniversary Sculpture located on the IPFW campus in Fort Wayne. Designed by Jodi P. Boyden, BFA '92, the sculpture was made possible by donations from many students, faculty, staff and alumni and by special gifts of labor and materials. The donors are listed on a plaque in the classroom-medical lobby.
