Cooper

Try: http://www.behavioral-safety.com

According to its owner, the address above will take you to the most popular industrial safety Web site in the world. Meet Dominic Cooper of IU’s School of Health, Physical Education (HPER) in Bloomington. He joined the Department of Applied Health faculty last January, relocating from England, where he has received national awards for developing safety programs. Using his methods, one industrial company in Great Britain reporting 319 accidents during one year, reduced that total by more than 50 percent in nine months. Two years later, there were only 26 accidents reported.

The key to safety in the workplace, Cooper maintains, is getting everyone involved, from the top levels of management on down. He has published three books on industrial safety, including Improving Safety Culture: A Practical Guide that covers safety climate, behavior and management. He’s also co-editor of the new online International Journal of Behavior Safety.

Incidentally, HPER’s Department of Kinesiology began offering a master’s degree program in ergonomics this semester. Interested? E-mail department chair John Shea at jbshea@indiana.edu.
