| ‘Women’s Sexualities: Portrayals and Perspectives’
• Activist and writer Gloria Steinem, perhaps best known as co-founder of
Ms. Magazine, will be the keynote speaker at “Women’s Sexualities:
Portrayals and Perspectives,” a series of events planned to mark
the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Kinsey Institute’s
landmark book, Sexual Behavior in the Human Female, and
the pioneering efforts of researcher Alfred Kinsey. The Kinsey Institute
will coordinate the series, which will address women’s sexualities,
their diversity and their relation to gender and reproduction. Steinem
will speak at the IU Auditorium in Bloomington at 7 p.m. Feb. 6
and will address the changing face of women’s sexualities over the
past half century. (Steinem also is the keynoter at the women’s
conference at IU East in March. See the special feature section
about IU’s Richmond campus in today’s issue.) An art exhibition,
which opens Valentine’s Day at the School of Fine Arts Gallery in
Bloomington, will feature works by contemporary female artists and
selections from the Kinsey Institute collection. Invited artists
include sculptor Nancy Davidson, video artist Patty Change, painter
Nicole Eisenman, photographers Laura Letinsky and Renee Cox, and
textile artist Ghada Amer. From the Kinsey collection will be works
by Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Leonor Fini, Otto Dix, Clara Tice
and Frank Yamrus, and a new acquisition by Judy Chicago. “Maidens,
Mothers and Crones Talk about Living with Passion” will be a daylong
workshop on the IPFW campus Feb 15 that will bring women from three
different generations together to explore the many aspects of feminine
sexuality as they are expressed in the cycles of life. This workshop
will provide a variety of activities to help women understand and
appreciate the female body, mind and psyche through discussion and
interaction of daughters, mothers and grandmothers. The activities
will involve role playing, writing, discussions, music and poetry
to allow each individual to come to a greater understanding of her
complete feminine nature and the meaning it holds for her and those
with whom she shares a legacy. For other activities, go to this
