Gender Awareness Week

Hansen in costume

The IU East Commission on the Status of Women presented Gender Awareness Week March 18-22. Men and women were invited to attend activities and learn how to break through gender norms.

Students and community organizations displayed research and presentations throughout the week at the Gender Aware Fair held in Whitewater Hall Lobby.

Two brown bag luncheons featured the topics “Self-Esteem: Removing Approval Addiction,” presented by Deborah May, associate professor of nursing, and “Anxious and Depressing Times,” presented by Janet Gray of the IU East Center for Health Promotion.

Sandra Hansen portrayed women from history in the one-woman play, Kate’s Pants. She stepped onto the stage wearing 11 layers of clothes. Hansen shed costume layers one at a time to become Amelia Bloomer, Sojourner Truth and Susan B. Anthony, among others.
