The dreidel is one of the most well-known symbols of Hanukah,
the Jewish Festival of Lights; it is a four-sided top
with a Hebrew letter printed on each side and is used
to play a children’s game. The letters mean "A
Great Miracle Happened There." In Israel, the dreidel
is different, in that the letters signify "A Miracle
Happened Here," referring to the miracle of the Menorah,
or seven-branched candelabrum, in the Temple of Jerusalem
following a revolt led by Judah Macabee against the Greeks,
in 165 BCE. While legend has it that there was only sufficient
purified olive oil to light the Menorah for one day, the
lamp burned miraculously for eight days in the temple |
