MSA sponsors Ramadan ‘Fast-a-Thon’

The IU Bloomington chapter of the Muslim Students’ Association of the U.S. and Canada sponsored its second annual continental program, the “Ramadan Fast-a-Thon,” to raise funds for the hungry during the Islamic month of Ramadan, a traditional time of fasting during daylight hours as an act of submission, solidarity and remembrance.

Ramadan, which began in late October, was chosen as the time for Muslim college students to raise the consciousness of their non-Muslim peers by hosting a day of fasting on Nov. 13, and for each non-Muslim student participant in the fast, $1 was provided to local food banks by sponsoring businesses.

MSA members and their peers at IU shared in a meal following the fast at the McNutt Dining Room. Last year, about 30 MSA chapters hosted Fast-a-Thons on their campuses. MSA of the U.S. and Canada was founded in 1963. Since then, it has served thousands of Muslim students throughout North America.
