| University expertise helping county fight tobacco use. |
|
| Two years ago, the Community Resource Development Center (CRDC) became one of IPFW’s Centers of Excellence. The center is a joint effort among faculty and staff at IPFW and community representatives in the tri-state area. Its overview is to build on past successes of research and training done by IPFW faculty to strengthen the university’s support for its neighbors. The center plans to reach that goal in a number of ways, some of which include providing clients with various forms of technical help, offering training workshops and maintaining a resource library.
Earlier this year, the center worked with Smoke Free Allen County and helped evaluate its 2002-2003 campaign. The organization’s main objective sounded simple: to change the cultural perceptions and social acceptability of tobacco use in Allen County. But Marie Washington, the director of the campaign, said it’s not that simple.
“Fighting ‘big tobacco’ creates an uneven playing field. However, we are fueled not by money but by passion of doing the right thing. We know tobacco is the only product that when used according to directions…kills.”
Washington said CRDC has specifically helped the campaign with project oversight and management, statistical analysis, and also will help in publishing a technical report
on the coalition’s progress and accomplishments.
