Hats off to the IU campuses’ United Way volunteers


IU Home Pages takes this opportunity to extend an institutional thank you to the men and women on IU’s campuses that have volunteered their skills and attentions toward raising funds for local social service organizations through campus United Way campaigns.

And if you haven’t made a pledge and wish to do so, use this contact information for assistance.

This year’s United Way campaign at IU Bloomington, which ends Nov. 30, is co-chaired by Kumble Subbaswamy, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Gerardo González, university dean of the School of Education. IUB’s goal is $615,000; to date, $299,967 (48.8 percent of the goal) has been raised. IU Home Pagesregrets an erroneous figure appearing in the Oct. 22 newsprint edition.

IUPUI’s United Way campaign ended Oct. 29. The campus goal was $300,000. Co-chairs: Nan Bohan, dean of faculties; David Burr, IU School of Medicine (IUSM); Len Erickson, IUSM ; Miriam Langsam, School of Liberal Arts; Maggie Miller, Auxiliary Services; and Angela McBride, university dean emerita of the School of Nursing. IU Southeasthas raised approximately $7,000; no specific target goal was set. The co-chairs are Jim St. Clair of the School of Social Sciences and Laura Ryan of the Volunteer Center. For more information, contact Paula Sylvester at the Student Affairs Office: 812-941-2420.

IU East has a $10,000 goal for its United Way campaign, which is chaired by Julianne Stout, Library and Media Services, and Ashton Veramallay, professor of economics.

IUPU-Columbus’ Dennis White is the chair for the Columbus United Way appeal. “We have set a goal for participation at 100 percent and hope to raise $5,000 from the 85 employees on campus. At present, we have $1,602 raised with the donations of 10 individuals,” White reported. 

IU Kokomo has just started its campaign, according to chair Ellen Sigler, assistant professor of educational psychology. Information on goal was not available at press time.

IPFW co-chairs Art Friedel and Michele DeVinney report IPFW’s goal is 5 percent above last year’s $30,000 goal, at $31,500. The Mastodons on Parade public art display is serving as a fund-raiser for United Way this year. Contact Irene Walters at 260-481-6105 for information.

IU Northwest is partnering with Lake Area United Way for the first time this year. The campaign kicked off Wednesday, Nov. 10. In lieu of co-chairs, the campaign has a leadership team spearheaded by Keith Kirkpatrick, who is executive director of the Institute for Innovative Leadership at IU Northwest. IU South Bend, which began its campaign on Oct. 11, has raised more than $11,608, or 41 percent of its goal of $27,000. Campus chair is Jennifer Klein, Dental Education, who reported that the campaign has 42 captains for individual units on campus. The campaign runs through the end of November.
