After 33 years as professor of acting and directing, Howard Jensen bids farewell to IU Bloomington with Anton Chekhov’s play, The Cherry Orchard. Chekhov’s masterpiece, a play about transition, is a fitting conclusion to Jensen’s tenure at Indiana.
“We don’t always say what we are expected to say. We often try to avoid saying what we really want to say... The quintessential scene in the play is when Varya and Lopákhin are left alone to talk about their marriage after everyone has decided for them that they must marry. They talk about the weather. In a few seconds, a decision is made with life-long consequences. It is in the small things that a life is changed forever. It’s like the road not taken. I like the road I took.
