Eighty percent of suicides completed by men

Suicide is a tragic subject, but IU South Bend psychology professor John L. McIntosh knows almost every thing there is to know about suicidology, the study of suicide. In 1998, there were 30,575 self-inflicted deaths in America, one every 17.2 minutes, and suicide is the eighth leading cause of death. His statistics indicate that 80 percent of all suicides are completed by men—overwhelmingly white men. The encouraging news, however, is that suicides have declined since 1933, excepting for occasional statistical blips probably tied to bad economic times.
