He gave the keynote addresses at Experian’s Vision 2001 conference in San Antonio (“Why Should We Care About Fraud Anyway?”) and at an American Corporate Counsel Association conference in Cincinnati (“Privacy in the Information Age”), where he also moderated a roundtable of Fortune 500 company chief privacy officers. He spoke on “Internet Privacy” at the Women in Law conference and on “Information Privacy” at an Indiana Legislature Services Agency CLE program, both in Indianapolis.

Jack Dvorak, journalism, was named 2001 Journalism Educator of the Year by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, scholastic journalism division. He was honored in Washington, D.C., in August.

Michele Bowlen, university interior designer, has been elected to her first term as secretary of the Association of University Interior Designers (AUID). She was elected at and attended AUID’s annual conference hosted this year by Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. Her term is over in December 2002.

Violette Verdy, School of Music, has received the CORPS de Ballet International Award and the GALA XV Woman of Distinction Award. The CORPS de Ballet International is a professional organization committed to the exploration, development and advancement of ballet in higher education, and the award was presented at the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle during the summer. The GALA XV Woman of Distinction Award was presented last spring by Birmingham-Southern College, which honors women from around the world for their professional accomplishments. Past winners include Bette Davis, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Walters and Olivia de Havilland, among many others. Verdy was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet for 20 years and is the former artistic director of the Paris Opera Ballet. She joined the IU faculty in 1996.

Charles Wise, SPEA, is the author of “The Supreme Court’s New Constitutional Federalism: Implications for Public Administration,” in the May/June issue of Public Administration Review.

Kevin Brown, School of Law, delivered a paper entitled “Can African-American Students Benefit from Single-Race Schools with Specialized Curricula?” at the Louis L. Redding Civil Rights Symposium, “Will Recent Supreme Court Decisions Lead to the Resegregation of Public Schools?” held at the University of Delaware Oct. 5, in Newark.

Evans

Andrew Evans, chemistry, has been awarded a Johnson & Johnson Focused Giving Award, by the Johnson & Johnson Corporate Office of Science and Technology, New Brunswick, N.J. The program was established in 1980 to stimulate exploration in medical science, and funds are intended to support basic biomedical research in key universities, colleges and research institutions around the world. Setting new directions in science and technology is the cornerstone of the Focused Giving concept. Evans’ discipline area is organic; his research group is focused on the exploration and development of reactive intermediates for total synthesis of stereochemically complex and biologically significant natural products. The group is also interested in the development of new transition metal-catalyzed reactions. The current award provides Evans with research funds to develop the temporary silicon-tethered ring-closing metathesis reactions as a conceptually new, cross-coupling method for target directed synthesis.

Roland A. Coté is the new registrar for the Bloomington campus. He began his tenure in the summer, succeeding R. Gerald Pugh, who accepted a new position as associate dean in the School of Continuing Studies. Susan Langsdale, formerly associate registrar, is director of budget and planning for the Office of Enrollment Services. She will continue to direct enrollment analysis and data access authorization activities in the registrar’s office.
